What is Chiropractic?
According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges
"Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health."
The Goal of Chiropractic Care
Because chiropractic treatments are primarily applied to the spinal region, many individuals incorrectly assume that chiropractors treat only back and neck ailments. While we do quickly and effectively eliminate back and neck pain, it's not the only goal. The objective is to restore and optimize human health. In fact, according to a statement from The Association of Chiropractic Colleges,
"The purpose of chiropractic is to optimize health."
How Chiropractic Works
You may be asking yourself... how can a treatment which effectively treats back and neck pain also optimize my health? To answer this I will need to give you a brief understanding on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system.
You see, the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) controls and coordinates every single function inside your body and does so innately (without you having to think about it). Because of the importance and fragility of this system it has been totally encased by bone for protection. The skull protects the brain and the 24 movable segments of your spinal column protect the spinal cord.
When the stresses of everyday life become more than your body can handle your muscles tense up pulling the movable segments of your spine out of their normal position causing irritation to the exiting spinal nerves. As a result the functioning of the nervous system is negatively influenced as is the functioning of the cells, tissues and organs which are supplied by the affected nerve/s
In short, correcting spinal misalignments that irritate the nervous system can have a profound effect on patients suffering from various, seemingly non-spinal health conditions.
What Chiropractors Do
We are the only health care providers trained to locate, detect and correct these misalignments known as subluxations.
We do so by using highly refined skills to check your spine for any subluxations, fixations or other spinal abnormalities. If subluxations or other abnormalities are detected, we will generally apply a gentle force in a corrective manner to the affected spinal area removing the irritation and improving overall health.
How Chiropractic Differs
There are many differences between the way a chiropractor approaches a case as compared to a medical doctors approach to health ailments.
Primarily, a chiropractor understands that there is an inherent recuperative power within all living beings. In other words we all have the ability to heal ourselves as long as our nervous system is functioning without compromise.
Secondly, we don't treat symptoms we try to find the cause of your problem, fix it and then leave it alone.
And lastly, chiropractors do not prescribe medications nor do we perform surgeries.
Chiropractors believe that correcting the cause of the problem provides significant long-term benefits over only treating the symptoms.
In contrast, the medical approach tends to focus more on the treating the symptoms of a condition rather than focusing primarily on the actual cause/s.
The Benefits of Chiropractic
